چکیده

Static strength characteristics of structural materials are of great importance for the analysis of the materials behaviour under mechanical loadings. Mechanical characteristics of structural materials such as elastic limit, strength limit, ultimate tensile strength, plasticity are, unlike elastic moduli, very sensitive to the presence of impurities and defects of crystal structure. Direct atomistic modeling of the static mechanical strength characteristics of real materials is an extremely difficult task since the typical time scales available for the direct modeling in the frames of classical molecular dynamics do not exceed a hundred of nanoseconds. This means that the direct atomistic modeling of the material deformation can be done for the regimes with rather high strain rates at which the yield stress and other mechanical strength characteristics are controlled by microscopic mechanisms different from those at low (quasi-static) strain rates. In essence, the plastic properties of structural materials are determined by the dynamics of the extended defects of crystal structure (edge and screw dislocations) and by interactions between them and with the other defects in the crystal. In the present work we propose a method that is capable to model the dynamics of edge dislocations in the fcc and hcp materials at dynamic deformations and to estimate the material static yield stress in the states of interest in the frames of the atomistic approach. The method is based on the numerical characterization of the stress relaxation processes in specially generated samples containing solitary edge dislocations.

Modeling and Experimental Study of Static Recovery and Mechanical Behavior of AA5052 Alloy During Cold-Working and Subsequent Annealing

In the present study, the mechanical behavior of AA5052 aluminum alloy during cold deformation and subsequent isothermal annealing in a temperature range of 225-300oC was investigated using the uniaxial tensile test data. It is found that by increasing the annealing time and temperature the material yield strength is decreased. The microstructural investigations of the annealed samples show tha...

Complex macroscopic plastic flow arising from non-planar dislocation core structures

For a broad range of crystalline materials complex dislocation core structures have a significant effect on macroscopic plastic flow, causing unexpected deformation modes that are strongly influenced by other components of stress in addition to the glide stress on a given slip system and on the sign of stress. In this paper we use atomistic simulations of a screw dislocation in bcc molybdenum t...

Influence of non-glide stresses on plastic flow: from atomistic to continuum modeling

The Schmid law, which is accurate for face-centered-cubic (fcc) metals, assumes that only the shear stress acting in the slip plane in the slip direction controls the plastic deformation. Hence, it is implicitly assumed that the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for the slip is not affected by any other components of the applied stress tensor. This rule is almost ubiquitously utilized in la...

Effects of Grain Boundary Disorder on Yield Strength

It was recently reported that segregation of Zr to grain boundaries (GB) in nanocrystalline Cu can lead to the formation of disordered intergranular films [1,2]. In this study we employ atomistic computer simulations to study how the formation of these films affects the dislocation nucleation from the GBs. We found that full disorder of the grain boundary structure leads to the suppression of d...

A Practical Method for Investigation of Aerodynamic and Longitudinal Static Stability of Wing-in-Ground Effect

The purpose of this paper is to present a fast, economical and practical method for mathematical modeling of aerodynamic characteristics of rectangular wing-in-ground effect (WIG). Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were converted to Bernoulli equation by reasonable assumptions. Also Helmbold's equation was developed for calculation of the slope of wing lift coefficient in ground ...
